If you’re wondering if the 13″ MacBook Pro is a good machine to do programming work on this is the review video for you. I do most of my software development work in Python on macOS and in this video I’m giving you a full review of the new 2017 MacBook Pro with a 13″ screen and without TouchBar.

I picked the non-Touch Bar model with the base CPU configuration because I wanted a working Esc key. I used the extra money to max out the RAM (16 gb) and the SSD storage (512 gb) instead. I believe this gives the best bang for the buck: http://amzn.to/2ukLztX

We’ll take a look at connectivity, “dongle hell”, how to interface the MacBook with DisplayPort and HDMI monitors, as well as the screen resolution and the available screen real estate for development work.

I’m also reviewing the best-fitting sleeve for the 13in MacBook Pro 2016/2017, the “Tomtoc Laptop Sleeve 11.6-13in” (http://amzn.to/2tr5Bqk)

In the second half of the video I’m switching to screen recording to show you how much space is available for programming and IDEs and I’m also showing you a trick you can use to maximize the available resolution on your new MacBook Pro using a tool called “EasyRes.”

I believe this laptop also would be an excellent choice for a computer science student or someone going through a software development bootcamp. It’s a computer that leaves room to grow. Watch the full review to learn why.

I have the one with touchbar and I upgraded it a little! I have two adapters (one for hdmi + sd + 2x HDMI + 2 usb-c = 100 euro and another one for cable internet for 39 euro)

    you did
    that super good!

Hey kind of late to the party but it is my understanding that the 128gb ssd has slower write speed than the 256gb model. Is this true?

  7. xmnemonic says:

I looked into the 2.3 GHz vs 3.1 GHz i5 differences. Yes, they're neck and neck, the 3.1 GHz is 0-15% faster for some applications. The real difference in the MBP models, for a $200 premium, the touchbar model comes with 2 more USB-C ports and an extra fan so that high-CPU activities can be sustained. With the non-touchbar, the CPU is immediately downclocked because it has one fan.

Do you recommend 8GB RAM varient with 256GB SSD ?? In India 16GB RAM varient is not available ๐Ÿ˜‘

I had been using MacBook Pro 15" 2017 for two months, the keyboard for me was painfully bad. But unlike many, I actually found the touch bar a handy tool. Anyway now I'm using Surface Book 2, no shallow keys, no awfully humongous trackpad, everything just works and it can do more than MacBook.

*Why I said the huge trackpad is bad? Because it not only deters the software from recognising gestures from time to time, but also makes it much harder to reach the edge of the trackpad, which is quite an issue if you use BetterTouchTool.

Great video and useful information I will be buying one and know I know what I would need on it

  11. Sri Amin says:

Hey Dan, I was wondering if you think a Macbook Air will also supply the same features and same feeling, because I want a Macbook, but I;m not sure if I should get a Macbook Pro or a Macbook Air. I want to use it for programming and i'm going for a programming focused pathway for my carrer but I want a good laptop along with my carrer. Thank You.

  12. Rand Tarek says:

This is the best review I have watched. Nice to hear from a developer perspective!

  13. Kuo Chong Yii says:

I would buy it if the price is reasonable, but it cost 11 000 when the average pay here is 3000 per months

  14. denniszenanywhere says:

Is it ok to get the cheapest at 128gb for coding?
